Teen girls every year make the mistake of having babies. Sure, they're cute, but that means you won't be getting a car for a while. You can't go to that party Saturday, because your mom is working and you have to stay home with your baby.
Having kids come with responsibilities. Is it really worth it? The Candie's Foundation is an amazing foundation that helps encourage young teens not to go into the world and have sex, and end up with a baby, and no daddy. Sad isn't it. Just remember to, "Pause before you play."
Here are two stories from the #1 Girl's Magazine: Girl's Life.
Melena,14
Melena didn't see it coming. She is eight moths pregnant. She walks into a counselor's office and sits on the couch. She does not speak English, so a teacher is translating for GL. We ask Melena if her boyfriend is still involved. He is not. "Me siento mal que porque pense' 'el seria feliz," she says. I feel bad because I thought he would be happy. He has told her he is not ready to be a father. He is living in El Salvador, Melena's home before she came to her current condition. She had lived there with her grandparents and knew the boy, 15, from school. When they learned of her pregnancy, Melena's grandparentssent her to America to live with her mother. Melena says she is happy with being with her mother, but while her belly is quite round, her persona seems flat. There's a glimmer there, we're sure. But it's masked by dark, dejected eyes. She can't chat for long since she's leaving with her class for a field trip. Melena smiles as she leaves. It's a pensive smile.
How was that for you? A girl who is sent to America, after getting pregnant by a boy who isn't ready for fatherhood, but you've read nothing yet.
Raina,16
Such is the case with Raina. Her daughter Elena is now about a year-and-a-half old. While, of course, Raina loves her child, her ordeal is not one that should be celebrated. The baby's father is in prison, sentenced to five years years.. His crime? He's was 22, a full-on adult, at the time he impregnated Raina, then 13. That is called statutory rape, and it is illegal in nearly every state. This man was a family "friend," a construction worker. Raina had never had sex before, but he made her feel special. Raina trusted him. Not anymore. "I wish I could have someone else be her dad," she says repeatedly. Raina and her baby are in foster care together. Her parents' old-school attitudes have led them to turn their backs on her and their grandchild. The only relative who communicates with Raina now is an older sister, acceptably married and the mother of a son. Raina was in two other foster homes briefly before finding a home with a family that is clearly very loving. Raina's foster mother is throwing her a sweet-16 party, and Raina is excited. But she is also bummed since she is not allowed to have more than 15 guests. She wants 30.
